Lore & Background

The Space Pirates' ambitions have shifted from simple theft to controlling cosmic anomalies. A pivotal moment occurred when a Phazon meteor, known as a Leviathan, impacted Tallon IV, creating Phazon that eventually corrupted a Metroid, which absorbed enough of the substance to mutate into Metroid Prime. This entity devastated Chozo colonies until contained within an Artifact Temple. Later, the Pirates exploited this instability; Dark Samus, formed from Metroid Prime's transformation using Samus's Phazon Suit, eventually manipulated and commanded Space Pirate forces, who followed her due to Phazon corruption rather than willing loyalty, to lead her mission of spreading Phazon across the universe. The organization also manipulated other species, such as when Raven Beak of the Mawkin tribe pursued his own plan for galactic domination using Metroids, clashing with the Thoha tribe long before the Space Pirates' rise to prominence. In Metroid: Other M, an android named MB, housing an AI cloned from Mother Brain's personality using data and samples obtained by the Galactic Federation from Zebes, served as a major antagonist, demonstrating their ability to weaponize past failures.

In Their Own Story

During the Space Pirate invasion of Zebes, Mother Brain viewed them as a "perfect force capable of restoring true order to the universe," successfully establishing itself as one of their leaders. Simultaneously, it attempted to persuade Samus Aran to join its cause, claiming she was indebted because it built her power suit. Despite these manipulations, Samus confronted Mother Brain multiple times, first destroying it in the original Metroid and again in Super Metroid, where the supercomputer revealed a grotesque body after its glass tank was shattered. In another timeline, Ridley, despite being defeated repeatedly by Samus, was always revived by the Space Pirates using cloning or robotics, ensuring his return as her archenemy. Even accidental resurrection by the Galactic Federation in Metroid: Other M could not stop his cycle of defeat and rebirth.
