Aether

A fractured world where light and shadow wage an eternal war across two parallel dimensions.

Aether is a distant, enigmatic world shrouded in mystery and ancient conflict, serving as the primary setting for Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. Once a thriving planet, it was fractured by a catastrophic event that split its reality into two parallel dimensions: the vibrant Luminoth realm of Aether and the dark, corrupted mirror known as Dark Aether. The planet is defined by this duality, where light and shadow battle for dominance through the power of Light and Dark Aether energy.

Lore & Background

The conflict reached its climax when the Luminoth sealed Dark Aether away, but the seal was imperfect, allowing the Ing to slowly bleed through into the light world. This corruption manifested as permanent darkness zones and hostile creatures that mimicked the local wildlife. The planet's fate hung in the balance until an intergalactic bounty hunter arrived, wielding the Light Suit and the power of Echo Visors to navigate both realms. By purging the Dark Aether energy and defeating the Ing Queen, the dimensional barrier was restored, allowing Aether to heal and return to a stable state.

In Their Own Story

The air in the Temple Grounds tastes of ozone and old dust. Samus Aran pauses at the edge of a shimmering rift, her visor flickering as it scans the impossible geometry before her. On one side, the golden spires of the Luminoth city stand proud under a pale sun; on the other, twisted obsidian structures writhe in an eternal twilight. A low hum vibrates through her boots—the sound of two worlds pressing against each other. She takes a breath, checks her Light Suit's charge, and steps forward into the dark, knowing that only by walking through the shadow can she save the light.

Reader's Guide

Aether is divided into distinct biomes that exist in both the Light and Dark dimensions, though their appearances differ drastically. The Light World features lush grasslands, ancient temples, and crystalline structures bathed in warm sunlight, while the Dark World presents a nightmarish inversion: toxic swamps, jagged rock formations, and swirling purple mists. Key locations include the Temple Grounds, which serves as the central hub connecting various sectors via portals. The Luminoth Archives hold crucial data on the war, while the Sanctuary Fortress is the stronghold of the Ing Queen. In Dark Aether, these areas are corrupted; for instance, the Torvus Bog becomes a festering swamp filled with aggressive flora and water hazards. Hazards vary by dimension. Light World dangers include environmental traps and standard enemies, whereas Dark World introduces gravity shifts, corrosive fluids, and creatures that drain Samus's energy. Navigating Aether requires mastering the Echo Visor to detect hidden portals and the Light Suit to survive in high-radiation zones where normal armor fails.
